5-28-18 Good morning! I hope everyone is having a great and safe Memorial Day weekend with your family and friends. Be sure to take a moment and thank your family members, friends, and/or strangers, which have served or are serving our country in some capacity for giving us, and maintaining for us, the great freedoms we get to enjoy as Americans. Without each of them, our great nation would not be what it is today. It is hard to believe we are in our final days of the 2017-18 School Year. We want to extend an invitation to all parents and/or grandparents to join us this Wednesday for our awards assemblies (KDG-2nd-9:15-10; Grades 3-5-10-10:45; and 5th Grade Graduation-11-12). We also want to remind you that our students will be dismissed at 1:30pm on Wednesday. Thank you for all of your efforts over this past school year! We truly appreciate your continued support of our students! Tiger Up! Matt

The Founders of Columbia Cares Program continue to do great things for children. This past week, their fundraising efforts allowed for the creation of a "Buddy Bench" on the Columbia Elementary Playground, and money to be donated towards a K-9 for The Mount Vernon Police Department. We are really proud of both of these young ladies!

5-19-18 Good evening! It has been an awesome week at Columbia Elementary this week with many meaningful activities for our students: We had Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades performing in "Where the Wild Things Are" Musical this past Tuesday night at Faith Baptist Church. On Thursday, we had our Fifth Graders visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Knox County Career Center, and Kenyon College to gain a realistic perspective on their life long goals after High School. Lastly, on Friday, we saw our new 18-19 Kindergarten Recruits at Kindergarten Registration, and later that same day we enjoyed our Second Graders biographies presentations. It is hard to believe we have 1 1/2 weeks left of school. Let's continue to stay focused and finish the 2017-18 School Year COLUMBIA STRONG! Tiger Up! Matt

Update: Please join a district level conversation:
Greetings We greatly appreciate all of you who have taken the time to 'share' and 'star' thoughts in our very first "Thought Exchange". We have five days left in our first thought exchange and still desire to hear from all of our Mount Vernon Community members, including faculty and staff. At present we have a total of 472 participants who have shared roughly 500 thoughts about our two essential questions: 1)What are some things we can focus on in order to improve? If you have not yet had an opportunity to participate please do so by selecting the following link |Thought Exchange| or by visiting our district website at www.mvcsd.us. You can view the short video and follow the instructions. If you have already participated, thank you for sharing your thoughts about Mount Vernon City Schools. Please feel free to revisit the exchange and rate the thoughts of others as there are new ones shared daily. Your thoughts are important to us and will help direct our efforts moving forward. Our first exchange will end next Thursday. Our goal would be to have 1000+ participants join us in the conversation. Thanks and take care! William Seder Jr

This Tuesday some of our students in Grades 3-5 will be performing in our First Annual Variety Show. Please
know that if your child is performing, you are welcome to attend. The performance will take place in our gym.
On May 23rd, all students need to wear their Tiger Up shirts for our focus on their lives after High School.
Our goal is to get their eyes and minds focused on setting goal to prepare themselves towards a successful path
towards college and/or advanced training after they graduate High School. We feel that it is very important
to get them focused on these goals now for a successful outcome later on in their lives. For these reasons, we
have established a strong partnership with COTC, MVNU, and Kenyon College. These higher institutions of
learning will be at our Tiger Up Assembly on 5/23 from 1:30-2:15pm. Parents are welcome to attend. Following
this presentation, we will be meeting in our Mentor Groups to further discuss this goal setting process.
Reminder: This coming Thursday is going to be a very fun day for our students. They are going to have field day
in the morning, followed by water day in the afternoon. Be sure that your child brings an extra pair of clothes with
her/him to school. A towel would also be a very good idea.
For lunch we will be having our annual School Picnic. Be sure that your child has brought her's /his's assigned item
for this picnic as seen below:
On May 25th from 12-1pm, we will be holding our third annual Senior Clap Out for those Seniors that
attended Columbia Elementary School. Please be sure to remind any Columbia Elementary Graduating Senior.
They will need to RSVP to Mrs. Miller at 1-740-393-5975 by 5/23/18. Lunch will be on us and we want them to
bring their Caps and Gowns:)

5-13-18 Good evening! Happy Mothers' Day to all mothers! I know we appreciate the many parents and grandparents that play an active role in their child's education. Speaking from personal experience, I cannot tell you enough how important your role is to each of our students and the success of our school. Thank you for all you continue to do for each of them! On another note, I want to thank everyone that had the chance to come out to our Donuts with Parents and 5K last Friday. These two events were a huge success! Without our PTO and all of you, there is no way any of these events would have done so well! We clearly continue to be blessed by all of you. Thank you! My hope is that everyone enjoyed themselves. Remember we have a lot to accomplish over the next 2 1/2 weeks. Let's continue to stay focused and finish the 2017-18 School Year COLUMBIA STRONG! Tiger Up! Matt

Welcome to a conversation about Mount Vernon City Schools.
Thought Exchange is an online tool designed to engage conversation about important topics. We are excited to share with you an opportunity to participate in a "Thought Exchange,” where you can share your thoughts about Mount Vernon City Schools.
We are committed to providing opportunities for all students to realize their potential. We are dedicated to building relationships and developing a sense of ownership within the entire community to improve student learning experiences.
We invite you to Share your thoughts about how we are doing as a school district. We ask that you take a few minutes to respond to two important, open-ended questions. Please feel free to offer as many thoughts as you deem appropriate per question.
You will then have an opportunity to see the thoughts of others and rate them. This is called the Star phase. The more stars you assign, the stronger you agree with a particular thought. We recommend that you rate a minimum of 30 thoughts. This process is anonymous and confidential.
You are encouraged to log in to the exchange often and revisit all three steps (Share, Star, Discover) adding, reviewing, and rating thoughts as you go. The exchange will be open for two weeks, ending on Thursday, May 24th.
Please join the conversation and share your Thoughts as we strive for EXCELLENCE. You can select this link, Thought Exchange, and go directly into the exchange or go to the Mount Vernon City Schools Web Page (www.mvcsd.us), and click on the Thought Exchange button to help us Discover what is important to you, both in your school and within Mount Vernon City School District.
Thank you for sharing!
