Tiger Newsflash 4-22-16

Good afternoon!

I want to take a moment to report out to you about the great stuff going on at Columbia Elementary. This morning I am reporting to you from the friendly skies, as I am heading to a friend's wedding in California.  As it was not too long ago that my wife and I tied the knot, I have a whole new appreciation for someone else's wedding day.  I am excited to share this day with my friends and their new family.

Last Friday evening, I was counting my blessings for working in such a great community!  Around 6:30pm, as my wife and I were headed to The Bristol Motor Speedway for her birthday, We continued to be blessed by Mount Vernon.  On the south side of the building inside one of the outside light covers, we had a bird nest get a little too hot and it caught on fire.  The cover of the light then fell down onto the mulch and caught the mulch on fire.  Fortunately, our neighbor Stephanie Smith called 911.  Within moments our brave Mount Vernon Fire Department was on scene to make sure there was no further damage to our school.  We are fortunate because no one was in the building, and the only damage was to the light outside of the building.  The inside of the building smelled like smoke that evening, but that was it.  Thank you to both Stephanie Smith and The MVFD!!

Our a lighter note, I also thankful for the Kindergartner that complimented me on my jump roping skills this week.  LOL!!! Our students constantly bring us smiles at any given moment...

Why is it important for our students to do well on State Tests?

Despite your political view, state testing plays several vital roles in the world of public education. How a student performs on the state test provides the district, school, administrator, teacher, parent, and student with important information about how well they are doing in relation to the State Prescribed Academic Contents Standards in their grade level.  This means that we, as educators, are better able to serve their needs based on these results for the school days that follow this data.  As we, as educators, try to tailor our instruction for our students, this data can affect the academic programming that a specific student receives. If a student were to blow off this test as not being important, the school could misunderstand the student's true needs.  Just like a Doctor runs specific tests to tailor their treatment for each and everyone of us when we have a doctor's appointment, these State Tests are piece of that same process for those of us working in education for our students.

The results of these tests also have a direct impact on the relationship between the State and Federal Governments and our school.  The results of these state tests will dictate the mandates that the state places on both our district and school.  Our students play a huge role in this process.

Ultimately we know that we have the Best and the Brightest at Columbia Elementary.  These State Tests give our students a voice in showing the rest of the world our students' level of intelligence.  It is one thing for all of us to say this at Columbia Elementary, but it is something much greater for the world to see our students' success.  We know our student are capable of achieving great heights! This is where the rubber meets the road and their Super Bowl has arrived! We expect nothing but excellence and success! It is time to TIGER UP!

Attendance During State Testing:
It is very important on everyday that our students are on time and  present to school.  Please that if your child shows up to school late on a testing day, he/she will not be allowed in the testing area and will be scheduled to take the State Test at a later time on that date or on a different day.  The student will be in the office doing school work until all other students have completed their testing (approximately 90 minutes in length).

Reminders:

Columbia Elementary Cares Project

We are very excited to tell you about a new project that we are starting at Columbia Elementary this year called “Columbia Elementary Cares.”  This project was inspired by two of our own Columbia Elementary Tigers, who simply wanted to help others in the hospital.  For this reason, we will be collecting donations and making care packages for cancer patients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  This project is such an amazing experience for our students to participate in as they get the opportunity to “pay forward” to others in need.  Our desire is to continue with this project every school year.

Each classroom is being asked to send in specific gift bag items.  Once all donations have been collected and placed into bags, they will then be delivered to Children’s Hospital.  Our building goal is to collect enough items to make 100 gift bags.  We are able to achieve this goal!  If we meet our goal of 100 gift bags is reached, then I have agreed that I will be kissing a pig.

Below is a list of brand new items that we need from each grade level:

Kindergarten: crayons and markers,
First Grade: coloring books and mini stuffed animals
Second Grade: colored pencils and chapsticks
Third Grade: bubbles and various lotions
Fourth Grade: various kids’ magazines and kids’ stickers
Fifth Grade: watercolor paints and paper

You may start sending in your donations immediately.  For the safety of the patients in the hospital, all items must be brand new to avoid any kind of potential harmful germs.  Friday May 13th will be the last day to send in items.  This will give us ample time to compile these items into gift bags and get them delivered to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Thank you in advance for your help in making this a truly amazing experience and touching the lives of children who could certainly could use a little encouragement in their lives right now!
