Good afternoon!

Last week we had an amazing week at Columbia Elementary. It continues to be a pleasure to work with your children on a daily basis.  They are the true joy in our profession.   As our goal is to continually improve communication with all of you, I am also very humbled that we have reached 15,688 views through this blog over the life of 84 posts.  In the last month, we have had 1,048 views.  These views are taking place from locations  as near by as Mount Vernon to as far away as France and Germany.  Thank you to all that are sharing in the success of our student body!

Please enjoy this weeks weekly updates:

Please know that although we only have one official date for Parent Teacher Conferences on our calendar, we are able to schedule other dates with you as the need arises.  Do not ever feel that we will only meet with you once about your child's education.

Columbia PTO Spaghetti Dinner- November 3rd from 5 to 7pm

PTO is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner for families of Columbia Elementary.   There is no cost for the dinner,  though they will be accepting monetary donations at the night of the dinner to help offset the cost of supplies.  If you would like to help with the dinner, please mark below and a PTO member will contact you.  Please RSVP by October 28th with the number of people who will be attending.  If you would like to help out, please contact Mrs. Miller in our Main Office or write it on your conference form.

TIGER UP

We had an incredible time with our students last Wednesday talking about the importance of Trust and Honesty.  During our mentor groups we discussed the importance of each of these important life practices, discussed examples of each, and illustrated why being honest and trustworthy should be important for our students.  In our discussions we connect these concepts to their lives at Columbia Elementary and beyond.  We were also blessed by our very own Mount Vernon Mayor Mavis and Mr. Daniels meeting with all of our students to discuss how Honesty and Trust applies to their lives and why it should be important to all of our children.

Author J. Scott Savage visited Columbia Elementary

We were bless by Author Scott Savage visiting our school on Friday. As he spoke with all students in grades 2-5, he was a dynamic speaker, and he gave a 40-minute assembly that fun and interactive.  The theme of the assembly is The Power of Creativity.  Scott talks about kids who made the world a better place by using their imaginations.  He also taught the students how to come up with an amazing story idea in less than five minutes using a hero, a goal, obstacles, and consequences of success and failure.  Children were able to become the protagonists, and obstacles of their choice that have ranged from giant cheese monsters to ballet-dancing dragons to "Darth Mom."  This gave even the most reluctant students the tools to sit down and create something they are excited about.

For those of you that are not familiar with Scott, he is the author of Case File 13 series.  The first book in the series, Zombie Kid was a starred Kirkus review, Junior Library Guild selection, Amazon book of the month and Barnes and Noble select book.
His second series is Far world series is a fantasy/science fiction series.  Scott's newest series is Mysteries of Cove.  The second in this trilogy was released September 20, 2016.  This series is about how technology destroyed the world and for that reason creativity is no longer allowed.

Feel free to visit his website at http://www.jscottsavage.com/  At the bottom of the website is the trailer to the newest book.
