Weekly Message

Good evening! This has been a great week of going from the "top of the world" to "The Best and The Brightest" students.  I was quickly encouraged by how great our students are when I saw them do an excellent job at our county Battle of the Books on Thursday night. While the final results may have not been where these students wanted them to be, I cannot express how proud we are of each of these 5th grade students.  I have to honestly say I was astounded by how well they did answering questions, which I personally would have struggled with in a similar competition.  We are very proud of all of these students that participated along with their amazing Coach Mrs. Barb Ing!  As we have six an half weeks left in this school year, we need to stay focused and end this year strong.  We have a lot to accomplish before we finish.  Let's work together and make this school year the best yet! Congratulations to Our Students of The Month: K-2 Students of The Month: Grades 3-5 Students of The Month: State Testing Is Here (Grades 3-5): As the NFL is heading towards their Super Bowl, I want to share with you the dates of our Super Bowl at Columbia Elementary. During this time our students have the opportunity to show the entire State of Ohio that they are truly The Best and The Brightest.  These tests are important to your child as they give us information that will impact instructional decisions for your child for the upcoming school year. Please make a note of the following Super Bowl Dates and make sure your child is rested, prepared, and on time on these dates: Day 1 Day 2 3rd Grade English Language Arts 4/19 4/20 4th Grade English Language Arts 4/12 4/13 5th Grade English Language Arts 4/17 4/18 3rd Grade Math 5/1 5/2 4th Grade Math 4/26 4/27 5th Grade Math 4/24 4/25 5th Grade Science 4/30-AM 4/30-PM WANTED: NEW COLUMBIA ELEMENTARY TIGERS (K-5): Mount Vernon City Schools Open enrollment applications for the 2018-2019 school year will be accepted online only (www.mvcsd.us).  Both current and new Open Enrolled Students will be required to enroll through the online registration process. Parents who are Open Enrolling students to the Mount Vernon City School District must create a  “OneView ” account by selecting the parent icon at the top of the district website and then selecting OneView Parent Portal.  Instructions for setting up a parent account and for open enrollment are located on this page. Applications for new open enrollment requests will be completed online and  submitted beginning April 1, 2018. No new applications will be accepted  prior to April 1, 2018. The deadline for submitting applications is May  15, 2018.  Applicants shall be considered according to board policy and  administrative guidelines relative to open enrollment.  Once submitted you  will receive a time stamped email notification of your intent.  If you are currently an open enrolled student you will still need to complete this registration. Please make sure that you select the checkbox indicating that you are currently an open enrolled student. For additional information please visit the “New Student Registration Center” located in the “Parents” Icon at the top of the web page.  Please contact the Board of Education Office at 740-397-7422, if you have any questions regarding open enrollment.  Get Ready For Our Annual 5K With Ariel Foundation Park: Theme-Superheros-Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Superhero When-May 11th at Ariel Foundation Park at The Clock House (Rain Date-May 18th) Our Goal: To raise $10,000 in sponsorship for Improving and Replacing  Technology Equipment for Classroom Instruction at Columbia Elementary.   Prizes for: Fastest Man and Woman ($75 each) Fastest Boy and Girl ($25 each) Top 10 Best Superheroes ($5 gift cards each) REGISTER AND PAY BELOW: 5K Sponsors Are Needed: Please see our  SPONSOR LETTER for more information. MVCSD Senior Citizen Luncheon-April 18th: Area Senior Citizens - Superintendent Bill Seder requests the honor of your presence at the annual Senior Citizens Spring Luncheon, sponsored by the Mount Vernon Board of Education.  The luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18, 2018, from noon until 2:00 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School. Senior Citizens are encouraged to attend the luncheon which will be hosted by various student high school groups.  Student entertainment is always a highlight as well as the fabulous lunch prepared by the District’s very own Food Service Department (lunch is sponsored in part by the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County). Please be sure to bring them to our school and we will donate them for you. Your efforts are very important because The Ronald McDonald House pays their entire electric bill each month through through recycling these pop tabs. PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING:) ! Stay Connected: At Columbia Elementary, we pride ourselves on communicating with you. Check out our live and archived MV LIVE STREAM by CLICKING HERE or go to our www.mvcsd.us *We are currently exploring other ways to use this same technology.  BOX TOPS For Education: Collection All Year Long  The PTO will be collecting Box Tops for Education for our school again this year.   This is easy, free money to help support Columbia Elementary in getting supplies for our classrooms or fun treats/events for our students!  They will be hosting a competition amongst the school to see which class can collect the most box tops!  (This will be done four times this year).  Please feel free to bring in the box tops at anytime throughout the school year, and they will be applied towards your child’s classroom collection.  Each quarter, the classroom that brings in the most box tops will earn a reward.  This quarter, the willing classroom will have a PIZZA PARTY Directions: Buy products at the store that contain the box top label Cut them out following the dotted lines on all 4 sides of the label - the box top company is very strict on this! Make sure the box top date has not expired! Glue or tape them to the box top sheet, if you need more sheets, you may copy the sheet or use a separate sheet of paper to tape them or have the school send more home DONT FORGET TO ADD YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER TO YOUR BOX TOP SHEET SO YOUR STUDENT GETS CREDIT FOR THE BOX TOPS THEY TURNED IN.  THEY WILL GO TOWARD A EARNING A CLASS PIZZA PARTY!
