6-12-17

Good afternoon!

I hope everyone is having an awesome summer with your family and friends.  Please know we are working hard to make the 17-18 another great success for Columbia Elementary Students. Before I get into some individual updates, I want to take a moment to continue to extend our appreciation to our great community! I specially want our PTO,  The Kaufman Family, The Ariel Foundation, The Knox County & Mount Vernon Community Foundation, The Energy Cooperative Foundation, all families that either donated to our efforts and/or contributed to our fundraising, and many others to know that our Playground Renovations & Outdoor Learning Pavilion Construction would not be possible without all of you. While there is still a lot of work to be done, we are starting to see the product of all of these efforts:

Words cannot express our gratitude enough for your support...Thank you!!

Playground and Pavilion Areas Remain Closed and Continue to be Under Construction :

We are still maintaining that our playground is still under construction and remains closed for safety reasons.  While this new equipment is very tempting to play on at this moment, I need to be up front and let you know the are still dangers to our children in this area (i.e. the entire pavilion area, holes, and not properly surfaced at this time).  We will let you know when this area is safe for children and families to enjoy.  Now is not that time.

While all of the equipment that was delivered has been installed, we still have a few pieces to still install.  Some of these are four adjustable basketball hoops, a four person rocker system that has been donated by Customer Cutters, and a larger Teeter Tunnel piece (on back order).  I will keep you posted on our progress.

Once these projects are complete, we will have a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony that we will be advertising.  Thank you for your support and patience!

Congrats and Welcome to The Following New Team Members:

a)Mr. Mahdi Bradley-New Head Custodian-Mahdi has previously been employed full time by and has substituted for our school district.  In other experience, Mahdi has worked for Sanoh America, International Paper, FT Precision and he is a full time family man.  Mahdi will be starting the last work day of June to begin his transition. Others described Mahdi's departure from a previous worksite as being an employee that they did not want to leave their organization because of his work ethic.

b) Mrs.MacKenzie Scott-New Third Grade Teacher
MacKenzie comes to us from Fredericktown Elementary.  She is from and lives in Mount Vernon with her newlywed husband.  Mackenzie has taught students in grades 1-7 in her career.  While Mackenzie holds many specialized licenses and certifications to work with all students, she is simply put dynamic and a clear "committed homerun" for our students. To illustrate this point further her previous Principal described Mackenzie to me as "an innovator."

c) Mrs. Brandy Bittenger-New Part Time Cook:
While Shelia Lowe is now our new Head Cook, Brandy has been hired to be our new Part Time Cook.  Brandy has subbed for our district in the past and has proven her abilities. Brandy and Shelia will be a great team.

Please make MacKenzie, Mahdi, and Brandy feel welcome to our Team! They will be great for and with our students!

Join Me On My New Adventure:
As you already know, one of my favorite hobbies is to travel and see the world, while learn about other cultures and building international friendships.  As I typically do in July of each year, I am headed down under to new part of our world: Australia and New Zealand. During this adventure, I hope to learn more about their nations, cultural, communities, history, and ecosystems.   It has been my dream to see these countries since I was in high school.

Please feel free to follow me on Twitter @drmjdill where I will be posting pictures (when able) after July 9th.  My goal with these posts is solely to connect our students and families to the world. While Mount Vernon is awesome, there is so much more out there in our world to connect to and learn from....
