Weekly Message

Good afternoon! I hope all is well! Thank you to everyone that came out to Burger King this past Thursday Night to support our PTO. This Weekly Blog Message is longer than most because it will be covering the time between now and April 8, 2018.  Be sure that your children are aware that the end of this nine weeks  will be on March 22nd.  This means that all make up and missing work will need to be in to their teachers ahead of time. All grade cards with all children will be going home on April 6th. Just as an FYI, over spring break and some personal time that I am taking, I have the opportunity to travel to Lukla, Nepal and hike to Mount Everest Base Camp at approximately 18,000 Feet (Mount Everest is 28,000 feet at its' peak). Our goal is arrive at Mount Everest Base Camp on Easter Sunday, April 1st.  When I am able, I will be posting pictures of my travels on Instagram @mjdedd.  If you and your children are interested, feel free to follow me on Instagram. Please invite the student/s and parent/s to our "Becoming a Columbia Elementary Tiger Night" at 6:30pm until 7:30pm on March 12th.  We want to share the Columbia Elementary Experience with them!  Remember that Open Enrollment will begin April 1st  through our district's website.  COLUMBIA CARES-Buddy Bench & MVPD K-9 Projects: Deadline: April 27th THE KENYON COLLEGE DANCE CLUB IS RETURNING: This non-school sponsored club will start on March 16, March 22nd, and every Friday until further notice after Spring Break from 3:30-4pm. If your child is interested be sure that they stay after school on Friday until 4pm. The club will meet in the cafeteria. Reminder: Order Your Child's Marcos Pizza Box Decorated Back by popular demand, our students are decorating Marcos Pizza Boxes for the week of March 19th.  On this week, parents are able to order a pizza from Marcos Pizza with in your child's decorated pizza box. You Are Invited-Donuts With Parents-March 27th-8:15-8:45am Our Semiannual Donuts with Parents Event will be on Wednesday March 27th from 8:15-8:45am.  We are looking forward to enjoying our fellowship together with your children.  Please plan on attending. Tiger Up-Career Exploration-3/21-1:30-3:30 Plan: This afternoon is intended to give students an exposure to several different career options that may be available to them in their future.  The presenters are directed to make a connection to English Language Arts, Math, and Science within their presentations. This is to show the importance of what the students are learning now and how it will apply to their future.   We have made a couple adjustments from how we ran it last year: Students in KDG-2nd Grade will go through a 7 station rotation (1:30-3:15) like they did last year. Students in Grades 3-5, will be given a schedule based on the survey that they fill out in the near future about their interests.   Mentors-We will be assigning you to a specific rotation through the career fields to make sure we have adults in each room supervising and helping keep things on track with the presentations.  This means that you will not necessarily be with your group at all times. We are going to have the following presenters available: 13 Stations (12 classrooms and the library) 15mins per station (1:30-3:15): Judge Thatcher (will begin presenting at 2pm (has court) Veterinarian-Dr. Robert Kruger Ariel Corp Mechanical Engineer-Mr. Conway ODOT Engineer-Steve Miller Columbia Elementary Teacher-Lori Luna Pharmacist-Denise Conway MVBOE Member-Steve Thompson MVPD-Captain Dechant Dietician-Kelly Bailey Chef Bruce Kriedler US Armed Forces-Navy-Jefrey Boeh and others (??) IT Specialist-Mark Miller Beautician-Ashley McPeek Annual 5K Update: Theme-Superheros-Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Superhero When-May 11th at Ariel Foundation Park (Rain Date-May 18th) Our Goal: To raise $10,000 in sponsorship for Improving and Replacing Technology Equipment for Classroom Instruction at Columbia Elementary.   Sponsors Are Needed: Please see our  SPONSOR LETTER for more information. Please be sure to bring them to our school and we will donate them for you. Your efforts are very important because The Ronald McDonald House pays their entire electric bill each month through through recycling these pop tabs. PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING:) ! Check out our live and archived MV LIVE STREAM by CLICKING HERE or go to our www.mvcsd.us *We are currently exploring other ways to use this same technology.  BOX TOPS For Education: Collection All Year Long  The PTO will be collecting Box Tops for Education for our school again this year.   This is easy, free money to help support Columbia Elementary in getting supplies for our classrooms or fun treats/events for our students!  They will be hosting a competition amongst the school to see which class can collect the most box tops!  (This will be done four times this year).  Please feel free to bring in the box tops at anytime throughout the school year, and they will be applied towards your child’s classroom collection.  Each quarter, the classroom that brings in the most box tops will earn a reward.  This quarter, the willing classroom will have a PIZZA PARTY Directions: Buy products at the store that contain the box top label Cut them out following the dotted lines on all 4 sides of the label - the box top company is very strict on this! Make sure the box top date has not expired! Glue or tape them to the box top sheet, if you need more sheets, you may copy the sheet or use a separate sheet of paper to tape them or have the school send more home DONT FORGET TO ADD YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER TO YOUR BOX TOP SHEET SO YOUR STUDENT GETS CREDIT FOR THE BOX TOPS THEY TURNED IN.  THEY WILL GO TOWARD A EARNING A CLASS PIZZA PARTY!
