Weekly Message

5-6-18 Good evening! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend with your family and friends! I had an awesome weekend celebrating my sister-in-law's graduation from Marietta College.  It was an awesome weekend with the family!  I am looking forward to another great week with our students. The first part of this week we will be enjoying a Districtwide 5th Grade Camp at Heartland Outdoor School.  This is an awesome opportunity for our students help made possible by The Ariel Foundation.  Our students after their own fundraising and the Ariel Foundation sponsorship only had to pay $25 for a memorable and worthwhile three day outdoor learning experience.  It is going to be a blast and they will create tons of new friendships with other upcoming Mount Vernon 6th Graders! We will then end the week with our Annual Columbia Elementary-Ariel Foundation Park 5K at 6:30pm on Friday.  We are looking forward to seeing everyone there ready to run/walk and to have lots of fun! If you have not yet registered for this event, be sure to do so below.  Remember we have a lot to accomplish over the next 3 1/2 weeks.  Let's continue to stay focused and finish the 2017-18 School Year COLUMBIA STRONG! PTO Meeting We are proud to announce that our PTO Officers for the 2018-19 will be: President: Brandi Schillinger Vice President: Nikki Woods Secretary: Debbie Beck Treasurer: Taffy Frazer This ladies are an awesome team for Columbia Elementary students, staff, and community members. We are honored to have all of them returning next school year!  Please read our minutes from our most recent meeting and other meetings HERE.  WANTED: NEW COLUMBIA ELEMENTARY TIGERS (K-5) DEADLINE MAY 15th: Mount Vernon City Schools Open enrollment applications for the 2018-2019 school year will be accepted online only (www.mvcsd.us).  Both current and new Open Enrolled Students will be required to enroll through the online registration process. Parents who are Open Enrolling students to the Mount Vernon City School District must create a  “OneView ” account by selecting the parent icon at the top of the district website and then selecting OneView Parent Portal.  Instructions for setting up a parent account and for open enrollment are located on this page. Applications for new open enrollment requests will be completed online and  submitted beginning April 1, 2018. No new applications will be accepted  prior to April 1, 2018. The deadline for submitting applications is May  15, 2018.  Applicants shall be considered according to board policy and  administrative guidelines relative to open enrollment.  Once submitted you  will receive a time stamped email notification of your intent.  THIS FRIDAY-5/11-Donuts with Parents-8:15-8:45am: Be sure that you and your child/ren join us at Columbia Elementary for our semiannual Donuts with Parents Event. We love the fellowship that comes out of these events and do not want you to miss it.  We are  looking forward to seeing each of you there!! THIS FRIDAY-Register Now: Our Annual 5K With Ariel Foundation Park: Theme-Superheros-Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Superhero When-May 11th at Ariel Foundation Park at The Clock House at 6:30pm (Rain Date-May 18th) Our Goal: To raise $10,000 in sponsorship for Improving and Replacing  Technology Equipment for Classroom Instruction at Columbia Elementary.   Prizes for: Fastest Man and Woman ($75 each) Fastest Boy and Girl ($25 each) Top 10 Best Superheroes ($5 gift cards each) REGISTER NOW AND PAY BELOW: K-2 Musical: "Where The Wild Things Are"-May 15th at 6:30pm Be sure to come to Faith Baptist Church at 8764 Martinsburg Road to see our K-2 students perform. This will be a wonderful performance spotlighting our children at 6:30pm on May 15th.  We will be providing a shuttle between Twin Oak Elementary and Faith Baptist Church for  extra parking spaces.  This school bus shuttle service will begin at 5:50pm. Tiger Up-5/23-1:30-3:30-Planning for College/Advanced Training after HS: On May 23rd, all students need to wear their Tiger Up shirts for our focus on their lives after High School. Our goal is to get their eyes and minds focused on setting goal to prepare themselves towards a successful path towards college and/or advanced training after they graduate High School. We feel that it is very important to get them focused on these goals now for a successful outcome later on in their lives.  For these reasons, we have established a strong partnership with COTC, MVNU, and Kenyon College.  These higher institutions of  learning will be at our Tiger Up Assembly on 5/23 from 1:30-2:15pm.  Parents are welcome to attend. Following this presentation, we will be meeting in our Mentor Groups to further discuss this goal setting process.  Reminder: Columbia Elementary Senior Clap Out and Lunch-5/25 On May 25th from 12-1pm, we will be holding our third annual Senior Clap Out for those Seniors that attended Columbia Elementary School.  Please be sure to remind any Columbia Elementary Graduating Senior. They will need to RSVP to Mrs. Miller at 1-740-393-5975 by 5/23/18. Paying Forward to The Ronald McDonald House: The Ronald McDonald House at Nationwide Children's Hospital needs your pop tabs. Please be sure to bring them to our school and we will donate them for you. Your efforts are very important because The Ronald McDonald House pays their entire electric bill each month through through recycling these pop tabs. PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING:) ! Stay Connected: At Columbia Elementary, we pride ourselves on communicating with you. Check out our live and archived MV LIVE STREAM by CLICKING HERE or go to our www.mvcsd.us *We are currently exploring other ways to use this same technology.  BOX TOPS For Education: Collection All Year Long  The PTO will be collecting Box Tops for Education for our school again this year.   This is easy, free money to help support Columbia Elementary in getting supplies for our classrooms or fun treats/events for our students!  They will be hosting a competition amongst the school to see which class can collect the most box tops!  (This will be done four times this year).  Please feel free to bring in the box tops at anytime throughout the school year, and they will be applied towards your child’s classroom collection.  Each quarter, the classroom that brings in the most box tops will earn a reward.  This quarter, the willing classroom will have a PIZZA PARTY Directions: Buy products at the store that contain the box top label Cut them out following the dotted lines on all 4 sides of the label - the box top company is very strict on this! Make sure the box top date has not expired! Glue or tape them to the box top sheet, if you need more sheets, you may copy the sheet or use a separate sheet of paper to tape them or have the school send more home DONT FORGET TO ADD YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER TO YOUR BOX TOP SHEET SO YOUR STUDENT GETS CREDIT FOR THE BOX TOPS THEY TURNED IN.  THEY WILL GO TOWARD A EARNING A CLASS PIZZA PARTY!
