5th Graders going to JA Biztown on Tuesday-10-31-17:

Our 5th graders are going to JA Biztown on this Tuesday for a great realistic lesson on how economics works in our society.  This experience will give our students an awesome hands on experience and allow them to see how what they are learning in our classrooms applies to their future.  On a personal note, I have been a part of this experience in a different school district early in my career and thought it was very beneficial for children.

Our students will be leaving for JA Biztown at 9am and returning back to school at 4:30pm.  All 5th grade parents will be responsible for picking up their child at 4:30pm at Columbia Elementary.

Feel free to watch this video below to learn more about the experience:

Tiger Up-Digital Citizenship

Along with Detective Bobo's (Knox County Sheriff Department) informative discussions with our students, we had great conversations in our mentor groups on Wednesday about being responsible and safe online. Some fundamental concepts of these group discussions were:

a) To not share extra sensitive information about themselves with others online (i.e.home address, current location, or whether their parents are home or not).
b)To watch out for scams.
c)To protect their information online by creating strong passwords.
d)To be positive online and report negative behaviors of others.
e)If someone talks to them in an inappropriate manner or someone makes them feel uncomfortable online to tell their parents, teachers, or myself.
f)The effects of both a positive and negative digital footprint.

Some Resources for you to help expand this message:

a) EXPLORE INTERLAND-This is a free online game system created by Google to teach children how to be "Internet Awesome."
b)Interesting video on Digital Footprints.
c)Edutopia
d) NetSmartz
e)Common Sense Media
f) FBI

Congratulations for meeting your goals!

Congratulations to all of our students for meeting their grade level first nine weeks goals! It was awesome to treat all of them to extra recess for these great efforts in English Language Arts, Math, and their behavior. I really enjoyed spending this time with all of them!

BOX TOPS For Education:
Collection All Year Long
The PTO will be collecting Box Tops for Education for our school again this year.   This is easy, free money to help support Columbia Elementary in getting supplies for our classrooms or fun treats/events for our students!  They will be hosting a competition amongst the school to see which class can collect the most box tops!  (This will be done four times this year).  Please feel free to bring in the box tops at anytime throughout the school year, and they will be applied towards your child’s classroom collection.  Each quarter, the classroom that brings in the most box tops will earn a reward.  This quarter, the willing classroom will have a
PIZZA PARTY

Directions:
  • Buy products at the store that contain the box top label
  • Cut them out following the dotted lines on all 4 sides of the label - the box top company is very strict on this!
  • Make sure the box top date has not expired!
  • Glue or tape them to the box top sheet, if you need more sheets, you may copy the sheet or use a separate sheet of paper to tape them or have the school send more home
  • DONT FORGET TO ADD YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER TO YOUR BOX TOP SHEET SO YOUR STUDENT GETS CREDIT FOR THE BOX TOPS THEY TURNED IN.  THEY WILL GO TOWARD A EARNING A CLASS PIZZA PARTY!
Due Date:  Friday, October 20, 2017
Thanks in advance for supporting our students!

Paying Forward to The Ronald McDonald House:
The Ronald McDonald House pays their entire electric bill each month through the donation of pop tabs. Feel free to continue to donate your pop tabs to our school, and we will continue to donate them directly to them to provide electric for the families that have loved ones receiving treatment at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
