Tiger Newsflash 2-21-16

Good afternoon!

It is a beautiful day out today! As it is 50 Degrees in the booming town of Mount Vernon, Ohio, I find it hard to believe that we had a snow day less than a week ago.  It is great that the weather is improving! It is also hard to believe that we are reaching a total of 10,000 views on our Columbia Elementary Weekly Blog.  Last week we had 194 people that tuned in to the excitement and student progress at Columbia Elementary.  I want to thank all of you for your continued interest and support of our students!  Without you it is difficult to achieve student achievement!!

Please read our weekly updates below:

Thank you Officer Ruth!

Officer Daniel Ruth, Westerville Police Department (and Proud Columbia Elementary Parent), spoke with our students in grades 3-5 about the dangers of Alcohol, Tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) on Friday afternoon.  This assembly was an extension of our entire school Tiger Up Time in January. Officer Ruth and I both felt the older students had remaining questions after this discussion in January, and needed more time to better understand this topic.  Officer Ruth was very gracious in giving his time and expertise to our students and as result all of us had a very productive and worthwhile talk.

Unfortunately, we know that ATOD is a topic that more and more younger students are learning about in their lives away from school, and it is important that we try to prevent poor unhealthy decision making on their part. As we want our students to continue their success throughout their lives, we find that this time was worth spending.  I truly believe that all of us talking to our children about these dangers is a vital part of their lives.

New Partnership with Kenyon College

I am excited that we have created a partnership with Kenyon College.  Dr. Dana Krieg and her students have joined us in making Columbia Elementary a better place.  These students are helping us create a Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program during lunch and recess for our students. It must be noted that these Kenyon Students all have had a background checks. They are eating lunch with our students and playing with our students during recess at least once a week.  Please know that all of this activity is supervised by Columbia Elementary Staff. I believe in the power of mentorship for students.  As a part of this belief, I find it very valuable that these professional relationships are created for our children.

In addition, these Kenyon Students are helping create a Homework Club before school starts.  This Homework Club is for completing homework and/or sharpening our students' skills in their subjects.  These Kenyon Students will be here on Mondays and Tuesdays.  The students that come to this Homework Club can have their breakfast in the library and work on their work. In addition, Mrs. Garret is also in the library on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays for this same purpose.

Some of these Kenyon Students have also volunteered to help our in our classrooms at various times.

We are VERY GRATEFUL for this partnership to better serve our students!!
