Tiger Newsflash 8-27-17

8-27-17

Good morning!

I hope all is well! We continue to have a wonderful start to our school year at Columbia Elementary! While part of the beginning weeks of school include building relationships with students, establishing routines, and gaining a solid baseline (including testing) of their academic needs, we have had an eventful start:

Tiger Up Grade Level Discussions:

I had a great opportunity this week to meet with each grade level. During our classroom discussions, we talked about how important it is to: 1) Grow their brains with grit (Strong Effort and Willingness to keep trying). 2) Achieve their goals with grit 3) To challenge themselves and be creative 4)To pay it forward to others 5) To be "college ready." 6) To have fun.

Please feel free to check out my presentations below and feel free to discuss these points with your children:

KDG-2nd Grade Discussions:

Grades 3-5 Discussions

New Librarian and Technology Instructor
at Columbia Elementary

After Mrs. Garrett resigned her position at Columbia Elementary two weeks ago, we began the interview process to find a highly qualified, knowledgeable, and skillful person to continue serving our students.  The interview and posting process concluded with someone that is very familiar to our students, Mrs. Jeanine Davenport.  Mrs. Davenport has 32.5 years of experience teaching with a Master's Degree in Technology.  She prides herself on doing a job extremely well and building a strong relationship with students.  She began her duties this past Wednesday afternoon.

Please be sure to welcome her back to The Columbia Elementary Family. It is great to have her back.!

As we did appreciated the service that Mrs. Garrett did provide to our students, we do want to wish her the very best in her future endeavors.

Kenyon College and Columbia Elementary 5th Grade Partnership:

Mrs. Ferguson, Mrs. Justice, Mr. Seder, and I have been working together to develop a partnership between Professor Clara Roman-Odio's Spanish 380 Cultural Productions of the Borderlands class and our students.

The objectives of this partnership will be for the Kenyon College Students to:

1) Develop our students' reading with a focus on plot, sequencing, character, inferring, interpreting, analyzing new vocabulary, retelling, grammatical points, symbols, and etc.

2) To create a public presentation based on the readings from class. This presentation will then be produced at both Kenyon College and Columbia Elementary. More details to come.

On Thursday, Mr. Seder and I had the opportunity to meet Professor Roman-Odio's students and they are without a doubt of high quality and come from diverse backgrounds. They will be an asset to our students' learning experience.

We continue to be blessed by all of the love and support our local universities and colleges give to our students!  We are looking forward to this great opportunity for our students.

Kindergarten Fire Safety Assembly:

I cannot express my appreciation for Firefighter Trent Kaufman (Retired from Upper Arlington Fire Department) and The Mount Vernon Fire Department enough for their continued dedication and support of our students' safety and wellbeing.  On Friday, Firefighter Kaufman, The MVFD, and I worked together on the following important concepts:

1)To stress the importance of each family having a meeting place at their home in case their home catches on fire.

2) Change the batteries in your Fire Alarms (i.e.use daylight savings time to reminder you).

3) Once you are out of your burning home, STAY OUT!!!!!!!!

4) To stop, drop, and roll in case your clothes catch on fire.

5) To explore a MVFD Fire Engine and spray water from a firehouse.

Please review these important concepts with your child/family and make sure everyone knows your family's meeting place in case of a fire (i.e. The Mailbox).

Great pictures for this awesome day:
